Departing from Form, Arriving to the Essence

Departing from Form, Arriving to the Essence: Search for Definitions of Transformation in the Context of Architecture

The love of eternity and continuity lies in the human's most basic and irresistible desires. Human beings present their desire to reach eternity in their existence and they are in a constant change. Humans survived in nature being is dependent on nature. It changes ıtself and changes ıts around the world. It changes itself and it changes lots of things. Goethe says, "Everything is a change in nature, but behind this change lies the eternity". This expression is a sign that change is an indispensable part of life.

How does the relationship between the concepts of change and transformation follow each other? The essence is protected in change. Some old features of essence go and come to new features. Transformation is the case where the essence is replaced by another essence and there is no trace of the former. So change is a part of the transformation and is a subset of transformation. While differentiation which is defined as change occurs in form, transformation is a situation that concerns the essence, isn’t it? The essence ( human) is transformed into a completely different essence (insect) in the book of Kafka's 'Transformation'.

Transformation is an inevitable action in the continuity of life. This study has been aimed to create a new string of definitions by considering the concept of transformation from a different perspective. It has been interpreted over the sample studies that the transformation how occurred in the architectural knowledge and used in what way. At the end of the study, evaluations have been made to give a different definition to the concept of transformation. The definition of transformation as metamorphosis is emphasized in the study.

Imagine a new structure that can be changed, bendable and transformable. Imagine shaping as whatever you want these materials, floors, walls, stairs and doors, and even furniture when you need it. Imagine that these materials can be programmed to change at any time of the day for your needs and desires. What would it be like to live in a constantly transforming space?

Transformation projects start with a hypothesis with a dream. Digital media will enable these projects to live in a virtual environment without real existence in the future. Although these projects are not yet experienced in real applications, they can be made with the development of technology.

Space begins revitalization, shows to effects and reactions like an organism in the meaning of biological. The fact that space is seen as a living structure with the inspirations from nature brings about the continuous change and transformation of the designs. It can be stated that the changes that formally in the architectural formations with living identity gradually assumed a role in which the essence transforms.

Greg Lynn has been established a metaphorical relationship between the formation of an organic form and the process of formation of the architectural form. Thus, he aims to control the formation of the architectural form of scientific theories to analyze the organic process. In his earlier work entitled "Architectural Curvilinearity", he points out the interest of architecture in complex, differentiated, varied and heterogeneous cultural and formal contexts and the sources of topological geometry, morphology, morphogenesis, catastrophe theory, and computer technology as the result of this interest. Lynn associates many concepts such as "flexibility", "curvature", "foldability", "heterogeneity", "catastrophism", "fluidity", "nonlinearity", "morphological transformation", "heterogeneous deformation"[1].

When a wall of concepts begins to be built (and this is not a brick wall, but a mortarless stone wall), it is not known which the stones how will be used. The estimates of which places some parts may be useful are excluded. Deleuze and Guattari express that what connects the concepts is (It just like a drystone wall has been) the bridges. It is a call to see as a network of small relationships that are ready to dissolve, not as the stone wall at the finished and integral image. What is established with concepts is whether it is philosophy or art or science (all three have the power to form a plane that cuts chaos; it can also be remembered that architecture works with these three), capillary connections are important, not seated things. Fragile, rebuildable stack of information: It is not a monument that is further strengthened with every new stone. The wall of Deleuze and Guattari points to a complex group of forces, which, despite their size, are worthy of subtle relations with each other, where everyone can see a heavy wall. The wall of capillary relations is the fluctuation of some regimes in which every form of energy, whether living or non-living belongs [2].
